As entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and small business owners – creatives and professionals alike; marketing sometimes may feel like Mount Everest to wrap your head around. When you hear the term SEO, does your body start to shake and your head start spin?
Fear not, for I am hear to help.
I know there are many thing you’d rather be doing than reading about SEO. So in this post I’m going to try my best to cut out all the unnecessary fluff and get right to points.
When talking about SEO, one of the biggest factors google uses to determine your ranking is content. We’ve all heard the term “Content is King”. Bill Gates couldn’t have said it any better.
In the wild wild west of the world wide web, content rules. Especially if your content is of high quality, helpful, relevant, fresh, and consistent. According to the marketing gurus at Hubspot, post regular high qality content strategically, is one of the biggest factors of ranking over time. When implemented properly over a period of time, in no time you’ll be ranking page one on google! .. Ok.. thats a bit of a stretch. While it wont happen over night, it is possible, with the with action plan in place.
Now this rabbit hole goes very VERY deep. In this post however we’re going to accomplish one goal.
By following this actionable tutorial, step by step, you will understand how to craft the perfectly SEO optimized blog post for your website.
First things first. What keyword are you going to optimize for. You can determine this by asking yourself simply; What is this post about? Who will it help? Who would find it useful? Who will be searching for this type of content?
Most importantly, what will they be searching for in google (or any search engine), when looking for this type of content, or in order to stumble across it?
When you think “keyword”, you may think of a one, two, or three word phrase will do.
For example. You’re a wedding photographer. So you guess for every single post, you should choose to optimize for “Key Largo Wedding Photographer”. NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Although we will be optimizing for this keyword, because its a no brainer. These kind of keywords are also incredibly competitive and doesn’t tell google, or the googling bride exactly what that particular post is about.
The most important thing to consider when determining your keyword, is intent of the searcher. This way you can provide relevant and helpful information.
This is a great way to feature a wedding that you may have shot at a particular venue, IN Key Largo, and show off in front of that bride. In addition, you are proving extremely relevant information for that bride and for google when she searches for “Key Largo Lighthouse Wedding”. You’ll be optimized for both aforementioned keywords.. I however assure you that targeting the specific term is a lot less competitive.
Think outside of the box!
Think of who is searching? What are they really looking to find, or would like to find? Where, variations of the cities name? Why are they searching for this?
Long tail keywords (longer, more specific keywords), for the win!
Examples of some more great keywords you could use in this example. “Getting married at Key Largo Lighthouse” “Sunset wedding ceremony in Key Largo”. These kind of descriptive terms are perfect, and easy to write in a post naturally.
Keywords if so important that it deserves its own post. For the purpose of not overwhelming, and keeping it simple..
You should have more than just one keyword! A solid 5-10 is good. Get creative, and relevant. Remember.. who would find this helpful? What are they searching for to find your content?
For local businesses, I encourage you to always keep your location in mind. Again get creative.
Main Keyword: Key Largo Lighthouse Wedding Photography (er)
Complimenting keywords: “Sunset Wedding Key Largo” “Wedding at Key Largo Lighthouse” “Florida Keys Wedding Ceremony”
*Keep in mind, google love’s written content! What else is this post about?
“Best Florist in the Florida Keys” could be included in your post. Perhaps your content includes photos of the florists work..so its relevant, brides are searching for it as well, and its helpful.
Keyword research tools:
Keep in mind that google recognizes synonyms! So you can use variation like “wedding” “ceremony” “reception”, although not directly synonyms.. google is pretty intelligent.
Keyword stuffing. DONT DO IT!
Keep it simple stupid. Dont over think it.
*Awesome hack! You can use Google LSI Keywords.. See photo below. In layman’s terms, its googles suggested keywords.
Simply put.. There should only be one. The keyword should be at or close to the front of the title.
Key Largo Lighthouse Wedding Photography (er)
Key Largo Lighthouse Wedding of Tara and David.
Title vs Heading
When someone stumbles upon my post on google. How do I convey that this is what they are looking for? That should be your title.
What is the most relevant term that I want google to scrape for? That is your heading, or H1 tag.
If you’ve strategically optimized your title, keep the same (as the title).
Also keep it short. If your title is especially long, shorten it.
Title: Key Largo Lighthouse Wedding Photography (er)
*Tip: Ensure your URL structure doesn’t include any unnecessary mumbo jumbo like the date or a bunch of categorizations unnecessarily.
Meta Keywords: Not important. Dont stress it.
Meta Title: We covered this.
Meta Description: This is the description that appears in your actual listing on google.
Keep it short and sweet.
Google doesn’t display more than 160 characters including spaces. Top SEO experts agree that the Meta description tag has almost no bearing on your ranking. In fact many of these high ranking experts only use meta descriptions on their main pages, and not on blog posts. But as for a small business, I say lets dot all of our i’s and cross all the t’s! We want to optimize for all the click through we can get!
*Good to know: although it doesn’t affect ranking. Searchers will see their keyword that is included in your meta description bolded, which draws attention to YOU. Additionally, when your post is shared on social media, i.e Facebook.. it will display either the first few sentences of your post, or your meta description.
Meta Hack: You can include calls to action like “click here” or “learn more” to draw additional attention, and further compel the searcher to click on your listing
Meta Tags Tools:
To add these easily, I recommend using Yoast SEO Pluggin.
Yoast also allows you to set default meta information
Heading 1 – It is the most important on the page.
This is the equivalent to a newspaper headline. It tells google essentially exactly what this post is about.
Just like a newspaper, and just like your title..there should only be ONE! Should include your primary keyword.
This is your sub titles. Great to have your complimentary/secondary keywords as Heading 2’s. Less so the Heading 1, and more so than paragraph text. The lower the number the higher the importance, respectively.
May be bore than one keyword throughout post, but use sparingly and strategically. 2-4 is a good amount.
Example: Sunset Beach Wedding in the Florida Keys of Tara and David
Heading 3, Heading 4 – These are your subheadings.
They break up the article for viewers to read easier, and also allow for google to get additional main context on what your post or page is about.
You can utilize subheadings with LSI Keywords, as mentioned above! If your content features phrases or keywords as “pretty important” (Heading 2), that google already thinks is relevant.. then obviously your content is relevant as well. Naturally.
Paragraph. Overall your blog, and should contain at least 300 words of text.
Keyword should also be included in first paragraph.
Bold and Italic text. Use them. They also help users read text.
Internal. Link to other pages and blogs through out your site, respectfully.
Are there any websites you could like to that are very relevant to the post? Featured any products? Any people? Any business? Link out to them. Make sure of course their page is quality. Preferably begging with https as opposed to http. This ensures the site is secure for the people you send there. We dont want to sent any one to a crappy, unsafe website. Low quality links can hurt our ranking.
Anchor text. Use it! It’s super important when linking within your site or out too other. The key here is to keep the language natural.
Good example: Definitely check out the beautiful sunset views offered by Key Largo Light House.
Bad example: Click here check out the beautiful sunset views offered by Key Largo Light House.
You see what I did there? Keep it very relevant!
External and Backlinks.A topic for a later description. This is an immensely important factor in ranking. Another topic that deserves a post of its own. Its have other relevant websites pointing back to your site. This is not something however you need worry about when posting your blog, but a very crucial for after.
Names your images descriptively, uniquely and and in plain english
Ensure they have an alt tag. What the heck is an alt tag?
It serves to tell google what your image is about, basically. Some concept as naming your images. Be descriptive!
You can easily do this in WordPress, when uploading an image.
You can also add a caption, although its not super important at all. But if you have the time, go for it!
Sizing the images
The dimensions are not as important as file size. Have the images as large as you’d like where it looks good on your site. Not toooo big, and who wants to look at small images?? 1500px is a nice good size.
Make sure to reduce the file size of your images to enhance to page speed. Smaller images size = Faster page speed = Better visitor experience = Better SEO!
You can do this in lightroom, photoshop, blogstomp.
The most simple solution that I really like is tinypng.com – and its free!
Try to keep your images under 100kb. Although if its resolution is important, dont stress this number tooooo much. Certainly less than 300-500kb is good.
*Tip: Original high quality images are best of course.
Make sure to include a featured image.
This last one isn’t necessarily SEO related. But is a marketing and conversion must!
After you’ve gone through all the trouble to get your post to rank and visitor to your page.. what do you want them to do once there there! Always end your blog post, or ensure there is easy visibility somewhere on your page.. like the header, footer, or sidebar that include a clear and direct call to action!
Duplicate content – I know its hard work writing blogs, and coming up with original content. It however has to be done. Creating good and original content (text and photos) with each blog post will keep your site from looking spammy.
Dont keyword stuff. The Yoast SEO Pluggin, can help ensure that you dont. Did I mention its free!
Mobile Friendly – While you double check your posting, the layout, est on desktop, ensure it looks good on mobile as well. 54% percent of website visitors tend to be browsing from their mobile phone. Especially if you are servicing a younger demographic.
Everything in moderation (Except quality back links)
You dont always need new content per-say. You can repurpose old content or even add to your existing blog posts and new ideas, or photos become available. The is considered “new content” when google scraps the web for fresh stuff.
Follow this step by step guide to create perfectly optimized blog posts for your website, and you’ll soon be ranking on google. Its a ling game strategy, but it can be done.
